Microdrives
A year after their introduction, BSG is now able to supply a wider range of microelectrode implants suitable for many purposes. These implants have several important advantages. First, their cost is low enough to make them disposable. Single use technology eliminates cumulative mechanical problems such as backlash and slippage. Second, implants with different numbers of drives are available. Designs with 2, 4, 8 and 16 independently moveable drives are in production, and each drive can be configured as a single electrode, a stereotrode or a tetrode. Third, by altering the arrangement of exit holes for electrode guide tubes almost any area can be targeted. Other exit hole rearrangements permit recordings from two or more areas. Finally, the implants can be customized in several ways including number of drives, exit hole configuration, maximum drive excursion and electrical connector layout.
